Youth in Action

What is Youth in Action?

Youth in Action is the Programme the European Union has set up for young people. It aims to inspire a sense of active European citizenship, solidarity and tolerance among young Europeans and to involve them in shaping the Union’s future. It promotes mobility within and beyond the EU’s borders, non-formal learning and intercultural dialogue, and encourages the inclusion of all young people, regardless of their educational, social and cultural background: Youth in Action is a Programme for all.

ELSA is an active participant in (and promoter of) the Youth in Action programme. In particular, ELSA is involved in European youth exchanges, multicultural projects and international volunteering through EVS. Subject to age and nationality restrictions, any ELSA member is able to apply for any of the YiA projects we participate in. For exchanges you must be 18 – 25 (exceptionally we may be able to accept someone older), for EVS you must be aged 18 – 30, no exceptions allowed.

ELSA committee members may also apply for various training events held in the UK and the EU. These trainings are aimed at the European youth sector and are intended to help committee members acquire soft and hard skills as well as to facilitate international networking.

YiA Objectives

The YOUTH IN ACTION programme is the EU’s mobility and non-formal education programme targeting young people (up to 30 years). Its general objectives are the following:

  • Promote young people’s active citizenship in general and their European citizenship in particular;
  • Develop solidarity and promote tolerance among young people, in particular in order to foster social cohesion in the European Union;
  • Foster mutual understanding between young people in different countries;
  • Contribute to developing the quality of support systems for youth activities and the capabilities of civil society organisations in the youth field;
  • Promote European cooperation in the youth field.

The Youth in Action programme is supported by funds from the Joint International Unit, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)/Department for Education, and the European Commission (DG Education and Culture)

Interested in volunteering Abroad?

European Voluntary Service (EVS)  offers young people (aged 18 – 30) the opportunity to volunteer abroad for between 2 – 12 months. Projects are diverse and cover very many areas – cultural, educational, sports. music, environment, working with specific groups such as the disabled,  disdvantaged, poor, young children, ethnic minorities, elderly etc etc.You should register on Youth Networks website and subscribe to their daily bulletin to be kept informed of the latest projects and opportunities.

ELSA is accredited as a UK “Sending Organisation”. This means that we are able to apply for grants to fund your time abroad. For more information about EVS please look at our leaflet.
