You are cordially invited to a lecture by Dr. Duncan Kelly, Senior Lecture Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge.

Abstract: ‘Conventional accounts of freedom, and predominantly liberal debates about the concept of freedom, continue to maintain a distinction between negative, positive, or republican accounts of what it means to both be at liberty as an agent, and to have a certain type of political liberty as a citizen. This seems to hold whether you are interested in the concept historically or analytically. It seems to me, however, that the predominant account of freedom that are extant in the liberal tradition of thinking about liberty are themselves misunderstood if they are thought of in these terms. That is not a particularly novel thought in itself, but what I will try to show is how there was in fact a rather mainstream way of thinking about freedom that did unite major thinkers who are foundational to modern liberalism, but the account of individual and political liberty that they offer conceives of freedom as a form of propriety. What the study of Locke, Montesquieu, Smith, Mill and T. H. Green suggests is that by regulating one’s passions internally, and by being judged to act appropriately in public, a form of governed conduct is equated with the state of being able both to act freely, and to be understood to be a free person. So, the historical unity of a liberal tradition might well be upheld, but only when its historical and normative foundations are adequately reconsidered.

Date: Wednesday, 8 February, 2012
Time: 5-7 p.m.
Venue: Pyramid Room, K4U.04, Strand Campus, King’s College London

All welcome. Registration is not necessary.
