House of Commons Sandwich Student Placement Scheme 2016/2017

Applications for the House of Commons 2016/2017 Sandwich Student Placement Scheme are open.

The Sandwich Student Scheme is an opportunity for undergraduate students to work within the House of Commons, offering a unique insight into governance and the running of Parliament in general. Students must be enrolled on a degree which allows you to complete a Sandwich placement on your third year of study.

The House of Commons Service is offering five paid placements in the academic year 2016/17.

 

The Department of Chamber and Committee Services

This is a placement supporting one or two Select Committees with research and administration

You will be required to assist members of the Committee staff with the provision of support to the Committee, including conducting research and undertaking administrative and organisational tasks in pursuance of Committee inquiries or other work, preparation of briefing material for the Committee, assisting in drafting reports for the Committee, and developing a sound knowledge of certain subjects covered by the Committee. 

The Department of Information Services

There are two placements within this directorate

Outreach Service – The purpose of this placement is to support the Project Manager with the running of the ‘Universities Workstream’ and usual departmental business.

Social and General Statistics (House of Commons Library) – This is a statistics based placement supporting the Social and General Statistics arm of Information Services.

The successful student will assist the section’s statisticians in their work and conduct research for topics depending on events and interests in Parliament.

The Department of Facilities

The Department of Facilities is offering three placements.

Building Services – Mechanical engineer

This placement involves working with the Engineers Control Team and assisting them with a range of engineering projects and building services systems across the Palace of Westminster (a Grade 1 Listed building and World Heritage site), and other buildings within the Parliamentary Estate, as well as communicating with external contractors and the projects team

Candidates should be studying Building Services, Surveying, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Project Management.

Project leader (2 posts)

These 2 positions involve working as part of the Project Delivery team for Parliamentary Estates Directorate (PED) and ensuring the successful delivery of a wide range of projects across the Parliamentary Estate. Under the guidance of a Senior Project Leader, successful applicants will be given real responsibility and learn how to apply their own knowledge and skills to live projects in a high profile environment.

Candidates should be studying Building Services, Surveying, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Project Management.

What do we offer?

The placements in the Department of Information Services and Department of Facilities offer placements that last for 48 weeks. The placement in the Department of Chamber & Committee Services lasts for 40 weeks. All placements will commence in September/October 2016.
