The Lisbon Treaty makes the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights a binding and legally enforceable part of EU law. The Charter will affect all of our work, with the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty on 1 December 2009, so too the Charter became part of the legal fabric of the UK. This short seminar will give you a snap shot of the EU Charter, how it works and what its impact is likely to be.
The seminar will cover:
· The significance of making the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights binding law
· The UK’s Protocol to it, what does it mean and why it is not an opt out
· The added value of the Charter
· How the Charter works and its scheme and scope;
· The difference between rights and principles
· The role of the Explanations
· The application of the Charter in ten (easy) steps
Jonathan Cooper will explain how the Charter works and Rob Linham will present the UK Government’s position on the Charter.
